“We are proud that we pioneered many network developments in Bulgaria such as being the first to launch 4G among the major operators and the first to offer VoLTE. We challenged the market and competitors to catch up so today Bulgarian customer enjoy high quality networks. But a mobile network is not only about download speed and coverage. For any user, mobile network is mostly about the experience and lately video experience on the go”, commented Telenor Chief Marketing Officer Mr. Goran Markovic during the event. “This is why we want to offer our customers the opportunity to use freely and feel their favorite digital services in HD quality powered by the excellent Telenor 4G network”, he added.
During the event Telenor Senior Market Research Expert Mr. Ivan Komitski presented insights from a consumer mobile data usage habits survey, funded by Telenor and held with 2,600 respondents in end-2018 by the Arbitrage market research agency.
“Some 97% of the Bulgarian population over 15 years of age uses mobile services, 71% of them use their phones to access the internet and 74% of them have a smartphone. Only one in 10 of the 7-14 year olds does not use mobile services”, said Mr. Komitski.
More than 90% of mobile users in Bulgaria prefer post-paid subscriptions with their operators instead of pre-paid services with the number of users of two or more operators steadily declining in the last several years, the survey results showed.
Most of the non-mobile users fall in the age group of 65 or over but the highest growth in smartphone penetration in Bulgaria for the last two years has been among the 55 – 64 olds. In the end of 2018, some 66% of the users in this group had a smartphone, compared to 51% in end-2017.
Thanks to the smartphone penetration growth among seniors, penetration of over-the-top (OTT) messaging and call services (including Viber, Whatsapp, and Facebook Messenger, among others) in the age group of the 65+ olds also increased. In the end of 2018, about a quarter of these respondents declared they used OTT services.
The survey also showed that more than half of Bulgarian mobile users visit social networks (55%), watch videos (54%) and share photos (51%) over their mobile phones. Some 47% use mobile data to seek get their news and weather report, while fans of music and internet radio streaming services were at about 25%. Approximately 13% of mobile data users said they had performed bank transactions on their smartphones.
“This survey results reaffirmed our conviction that Bulgarian market still has a substantial potential in the mobile data and mobile digital services segments, including users that were not among the most active until lately. We will continue to further develop and improve our services portfolio and improve the network experience for all of our customers“, commented Mr. Markovic.
